Chapter Four

Ian woke and reached for Evan, but instead felt the cool sheets. He frowned, and sat up. Rubbing his eyes, he glanced around the bedroom, still not spotting him. Sliding out of the bed, Ian saw his clothing folded on one of the chairs by the dresser. He strolled to it, pausing before the glass door, then went closer, impressed by the garden beyond the glass. The profusion of colour was eye-catching and there were various seating areas. Turning, Ian went to the chair which had his clothing on it and he retrieved his boxers, donned them, then went looking for Evan.

Following the soft sound of music, he went down a hall. Ian leaned in the open doorway of what must be Evan’s office. It was a spacious room, much like the size of the master bedroom. Even with all the bookcases filled with books and the seating area with a comfortable-looking couch, there was still plenty of space. A massive desk was facing the door, with a credenza behind it extending to the side. Ian glanced left, then right, noting that the desk was set up to see part of the back yard through a glass door and also view the front area through the bay windows. Evan’s computer was on the right side of the desk, leaving lots of space on the left side available. Ian heard the clatter of someone typing.

“A lesser man could get a complex, being left alone in bed after he thought he had tired you out,” Ian said.

The typing stopped, and Evan peeked around the edge of the computer’s flat screen.

“A good thing you’re not a lesser man.”

His tone was teasing, but there was a leering look on Evan’s face.

“Would I disturb you if I came in?”

“Oh, you don’t need to ask. This is where the madness happens.” Evan rose from his chair, wiping his hand on the side of his sweats.

Ian approached him, moving around the side of the desk and leaning against it. Evan twisted his hands, looking unsure.

“Come here, Evan,” Ian said.

Evan stepped closer, but still maintained some distance. Ian wondered what would be the best way to put him at ease. He went with his gut.

“If I wanted a one-night stand, I could have had that a long time ago.”

“I’m not sure what you want from me, Ian.” Evan breathed out.

“You know, I fought being with you for two reasons. The first was, of course, my job. The second was, I already knew once with you wouldn’t be enough.”

Evan stared at him before moving closer. Ian opened his arms, and Evan pressed against his chest. Evan was silent, then raised his head. Tentatively, he reached up. Ian inclined his head. Evan touched the scar under his eye, tracing it down his face, neck, and his chest to where it ended just above his navel.

“For me, too. I want to know all about you. How you got this, and anything you want to share with me.” Evan sounded hesitant.

“I’m agreeable to that.
